Re attendance at WFW

Monday, July 15th, 2013

from some notes written for newcomers to WFW:-

Generally, when possible, the individual gets more out of the workshop if they attend regularly. That is for all sorts of reasons, including feeling at ease with each other so that we all feel at ease taking (poetic) risks. Writers Forum has always been a place where whatever you do will be treated with respect and where you will be encouraged. That is good pedagogy and, surely, a good way to live. (Don’t tell people where they are wrong; rather help them see how they can do things better.)

By turning up, you help to provide an audience; and that is valuable for all the others; and so we help each others, those who have started in recent years & those who have been writing… a little longer.

However long one has been writing, each poem is a new start. In that we are all in much the same state

The aim is not primarily to experience virtuoso performances at the workshop –and it is not an open mike – although they are welcome. It is a workshop. We’re investigating and trying things out.

The workshop may not always be demonstrative in response, but it does provide a good basis for (one’s own) judgment, one of the most reliable I know.

Anything goes. You will be treated respectfully.

Any kind of poetry is welcome. If the emphasis of the workshop has always been towards experiment, perhaps that is an indication we should take seriously. When it comes to your turn, we start from where you are
